Krugerrand Gold Coins

First minted in 1967, Krugerrands holds the esteemed title of the world’s most popular gold bullion coins. This historical significance, combined with their investor appeal, has made them a favorite among buyers. More Krugerrands have been minted and sold than any other modern gold bullion coin, a testament to their enduring legacy. In the U.S., American Gold Eagles may be more popular, but Krugerrands has a unique place in the global gold market.

Otto Schultz designed the obverse, which features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic.

The reverse depicts a springbok antelope, the national symbol of South Africa, along with the coin’s weight, minting year, and “South Africa” in both English and Afrikaans. The inclusion of the springbok, a symbol of South Africa’s natural beauty and resilience, and the use of both English and Afrikaans reflect the country’s diverse cultural heritage.

Minted in South Africa, the Krugerrand was first introduced to the United States shortly after Americans regained the right to buy and own gold bullion in 1974. This development led to a surge in gold purchases, and the Krugerrand quickly became popular among buyers. By the 1980s, it accounted for 90% of the global coin market. This inspired the U.S. to mint the American Gold Eagle . Today, it remains the most successful gold bullion coin ever minted, with over 50 million ounces produced as of 2018. Most of these coins were minted in the 1970s and early 1980s to meet the demand from Americans seeking to protect their assets against inflation.

Ban and Market Resurgence

In 1985, Congress passed a law prohibiting the sale of Krugerrands in the U.S. due to the South African government’s apartheid policies. By then, an estimated 22 million had already been imported, and the ban did not affect the trading of Krugerrands in the United States. In 1994, Congress lifted the import ban, and Krugerrands were again made available for sale in the U.S. However, during its absence, Gold Eagles captured the American gold bullion coin market, leading to a decline in efforts to promote Krugerrands. Despite this, there is an active market for Krugerrands, with thousands traded daily.

BUY Krugerrand Gold Coins

Gold Krugerrands, with their global recognition and high liquidity, are the most widely traded gold coins. This widespread acceptance, along with their status as government-backed coins, instills a sense of security in investors. Although they have no face value, they are recognized as legal tender in South Africa, further enhancing their appeal.

Krugerrands come in four sizes: 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce, catering to various investment levels. The fractional-ounce Krugerrands, introduced in 1980, are not always readily available.

All sizes feature the same design. The 1-ounce Krugerrand is the most popular and is typically available in large quantities. Although the fractional-ounce sizes are not always in stock, they are generally priced significantly lower than their fractional-ounce Gold Eagle counterparts. In the U.S., Krugerrands typically have a lower premium than Gold Eagles.

Krugerrands are made of 22-karat gold alloyed with copper. The coin’s distinctive rose color comes from its 91.67% gold and 8.99% copper composition, which enhances its durability. To account for the copper addition, the coin weighs slightly over one troy ounce with a full ounce of gold. Their popularity influenced the design and alloy choices of the U.S. Mint when creating Gold Eagles.

Krugerrands have the most active secondary market among modern gold bullion coins, with thousands changing hands daily. Most orders consist of mixed-date coins, although tubes may occasionally contain Krugerrands from the same year.

Krugerrands remains a favored choice for buyers seeking affordable gold bullion. Their lower premiums compared to other coins make them a smart investment choice. However, for large investors, kilo (1,000 gram/32.15 oz.) or 10-ounce gold bars may be more cost-effective, as these carry even lower premiums and are easier to handle and store.
