1964 Kennedy 90% Silver Half Dollars

The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars are not only a revered piece of American history but also have intrinsic value as a precious metal investment. With 90% silver content, non-collectible coins are considered part of junk silver investments. Because the 1964 Kennedy half dollars didn’t circulate widely, few became worn enough to be destroyed by the U.S. Mint, unlike the millions of Walking Liberty and Franklin half dollars. As a result, Kennedy half dollars are more abundant than Walking Liberty or Franklin half dollars, making their cost lower. In 1965, the Mint’s removal of silver from dimes and quarters and reduction of silver in half dollar coins to 40% heightened the hoarding of all 90% silver coins, especially the 1964 Kennedy half dollars.

Although minted only one year, over 425 million 1964 Kennedy half dollars were produced. By comparison, only about 477 million Walking Liberty half dollars were minted from 1916 to 1947. And only 309.4 million Franklin half dollars were minted from 1948 to 1963.
