1964 Kennedy 90% Silver Half Dollars

Since their introduction on March 24, 1964, the Kennedy Half Dollars have been extremely popular for historical, collectible, and sentimental reasons. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar holds a special placeholder in American history as it was minted just months after the tragic death of President John F. Kennedy. The coin commemorates his life and legacy, becoming an instant symbol for national mourning and remembrance of a beloved president. Despite over 425 million being minted, few were circulated because of public hoarding and the rising price of silver. Consequently, because of the government’s low silver reserves, these were the last 90% silver half-dollar coins minted.

The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars are not only a revered piece of American history but also have intrinsic value as a precious metal investment. With 90% silver content, non-collectible coins are considered part of junk silver investments. Because the 1964 Kennedy half dollars didn’t circulate widely, few became worn enough to be destroyed by the U.S. Mint, unlike the millions of Walking Liberty and Franklin half dollars. As a result, Kennedy half dollars are more abundant than Walking Liberty or Franklin half dollars, making their cost lower. At CMI Gold & Silver, we buy and sell 1964 Kennedy half dollar coins in bulk at a minimum of $100 in face value or 200 actual coins per transaction.
Silver half dollars are an affordable entry point for investors because of their manageable face value and lower entry point. However, their convenience makes them favored amongst investors and can garner higher premiums than dimes or quarter junk silver.

Kennedy half-dollar coins dated 1965-1969 contain 40% silver, which translates to 0.1479 troy ounces of silver and are known as 40% clad< link to clad in glossary>. In 1965, the Mint’s removal of silver from dimes and quarters and reduction of silver in half dollar coins to 40% heightened the hoarding of all 90% silver coins, especially the 1964 Kennedy half dollars.

Although minted only one year, over 425 million 1964 Kennedy half dollars were produced. By comparison, only about 477 million Walking Liberty half dollars were minted from 1916 to 1947. And only 309.4 million Franklin half dollars were minted from 1948 to 1963.
