American Silver Eagles

The American Silver Eagle coin is among the most sought-after silver bullion coins. First introduced in 1986, The U.S. Mint has produced over 600 million Silver Eagles, making it not only one of the most globally popular bullion coins but also a tribute to America’s artistic and cultural heritage. The Silver Eagle coin resulted from the 1985 Liberty Coin Act, which allowed miners to sell their surplus of silver to the federal government, thus creating commemorative silver coins like the American Silver Eagle. While considered a commemorative coin, the mintage of Silver Eagles remains upward in the millions annually. For example, over 700K were minted in 2023 alone.

The obverse design features the iconic “Walking Liberty,” a nod to Ellis Island and our beloved Statue of Liberty. It was designed by Adolph A. Weinman and was initially created for the half-dollar coin from 1916 to 1947. The coin is adorned with elegance, beauty, and symbolism that evoke the essence of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The star figure, Lady Liberty, stands elegantly striding towards the sunrise, her dress flowing in the wind and draped in the American flag. This iconography culminates in a timeless representation of freedom and hope that is deeply rooted in the American psyche.

The reverse side of the coin was designed by the renowned sculpture engraver John Mercanti. As the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, he left a 40-year legacy of designing over 100 coins. It is the heraldic eagle on the American Silver Eagle that he is best known for designing. This patriotic theme of an eagle gripping an olive branch and arrow establishes this coin as a powerful symbol of America’s spirit of freedom, strength, and determination. In 2021, a new design was commissioned by artiste Emily Damstra that features the bald eagle in majestic flight, clutching an oak branch.

Buying American Silver Eagles

Each Silver Eagle coin contains one ounce of .999 fine silver bullion and has a face value of $1.00, which classifies them as “silver dollars.” However, in the coin industry, “silver dollars” typically refers to older coins minted between 1878-1904 and 1921-1935.

Since the Liberty Coins Act designates them as commemorative coins, the Mint is allowed to sell them at prices exceeding the $1.00 face value.

Silver Eagles are shipped by the U.S. Mint in boxes containing 500 coins, which consist of 25 tubes, each holding 20 coins. A sealed box weighs 40 pounds and measures 15″ x 9″ x 5″. The minimum order for Silver Eagles is 100 coins, and a sealed box is often referred to as a “Silver Eagle Monster Box.”

Alternatives to American Silver Eagles include the Royal Canadian Mint’s Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins and the Perth Mint’s Australian Kangaroo coins, both of which are .9999 fine (99.99% pure silver). Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins are packaged 500 to a box and typically sell at slightly lower markups than Silver Eagles. In contrast, Kangaroo coins are packaged with 250 coins in a box.

Despite Silver Maple Leafs and Kangaroo coins being .9999 fine silver, compared to the .999 fine Silver Eagles, Silver Eagles generally sell at higher premiums and remain the best-selling one-ounce government-issued $1 silver coins.

CMI Gold & Silver Inc. offers Silver Eagles at some of the lowest premiums for immediate delivery. Orders of multiple boxes may have even smaller markups over the spot price.

Backdated American Silver Eagles often come at lower markups than the current year’s coins. If you’re interested in purchasing Silver Eagles, be sure to inquire about backdated coins for potential savings.
