Double Eagle Gold Coins

The Gold Double Eagle, a $20 gold coin, stands as one of the most iconic and historically significant coins in American numismatics. Minted from 1850 to 1933, this coin represents a fascinating era in U.S. monetary history. The Double Eagle was born out of the California Gold Rush, serving as a way to efficiently coin the influx of gold. It played a crucial role in international trade and represented significant purchasing power in its time

Two main designs graced the Double Eagle:

Liberty Head (1850-1907): Designed by James B. Longacre, featuring Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse.

Saint-Gaudens (1907-1933): Created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, widely considered one of the most beautiful U.S. coins ever produced. It depicts a striding Lady Liberty on the obverse and a flying eagle on the reverse.

Owning a double Eagle is an exciting means to possess a tangible piece of American history. These coins are known to be extremely rare.

Double Eagles are U.S. $20 gold coins, which served as money in the United States from 1850 to 1933. Their reign as the United States’ premier gold coins ended with President Franklin Roosevelt’s 1933 Executive Order 6102, which required Americans to turn in their gold coins and gold bullion.

Out of the 445,500 coins minted in 1933, only 13 specimen issues are known to exist today. Most were melted down following the abandonment of the gold standard. Only one kind known as the Weitznan Specimen, is legally allowed to be privately owned adding to its value and mystique.

This combination of rarity, historical significance, legal uniqueness, and artistic value makes the 1933 Double Eagle one of the most sought-after coins in numismatics.

Roosevelt’s action is often referred to as a confiscation, but technically, it was a call-in because those turning in their Double Eagles were given twenty dollars in paper money, which had equal purchasing power at the time to twenty dollar Double Eagles.
