The Australian Silver Kangaroo was introduced in 1993 by the Royal Australian Mint or the Perth Mint. Adorned with the quintessential kangaroo, it reflects Australia’s culture, wildlife, and national identity. The Kangaroo coin was initially introduced as a gold coin and expanded to include silver when, in 2015, a .9999 fine silver version was minted as the first pure silver coin minted by the Perth Mint. Some dealers assert that because of the annual image change, Kangaroos could demand higher premiums as time passes. Although higher values for different designs are unlikely, Kangaroos should be bought for convenience and timeless beauty.

Originally designed by Dr. Stuart Devlin, a renowned artist and metal worker, the coin’s reverse side is adorned with red kangaroos surrounded by rays of sunlight. Unlike other coins, where only the year changes annually, The Perth Mint creates a new design annually for the kangaroo with various modifications to the poses and settings, including series like Great Australian Artists, Explorers First Sightings, and Seasons Change.
The obverse side depicted the effigy of the reigning monarch. Queen Elizabeth II was featured until 2024 when the Perth Mint unveiled its first coin with King Charles III created by coin designer Dan Thorne. The 2024 coin has a unique “P125” mark, signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary.
With these innovative designs and exceptional craftsmanship, the Silver Kangaroos are a testament to Australia’s credibility as a leading bullion precious metals market producer.
For both new and novice investors, Australian Silver Kangaroos provide a perfect blend of intrinsic value and cultural heritage with delightful designs each year.
Silver Kangaroo coins have a face value of 1 Australian dollar and are recognized as legal tender in Australia. In 2015, the mint increased its purity from .999 to .9999 troy ounces of fine silver.
These coins are packaged by the Perth Mint in tubes containing 25 coins each, with ten tubes in a box for a total of 250 coins. This unique packaging sets them apart from other government-issued 1-ounce silver rounds.
Boxes of Silver Kangaroos weigh 21 pounds each, while boxes of Silver Eagles and Silver Maple Leafs weigh 41 pounds each.
